Here is the bio for the Champion for Children Introduction on 9-22-11:
The Young Artists String Orchestra was founded 2 1/2 years ago. The young musicians range in age from 8 to 17 yrs. old. Each member must be enrolled in private music lessons to be a part of the orchestra. Most of these students had never played in an orchestra before, and some were very beginning players. Their progress has been outstanding. We now present several concerts a year. The string orchestra has performed at South Florida Community College Concert Hall two times as part of the Heartland Orchestra concerts, as well as other venues.
The parent participation is an important part of this success as they drive their children from Avon Park, Sebring, Lake Placid, and Port St. Lucie to attend the rehearsals each Friday evening from 4:00 - 5:30 held at the Church of the Nazarene in Lake Placid.
Conductor: Diane Osborne is a professional violinist and teacher. Besides conducting adult orchestras, and starting young orchestras, she has a full studio of violin students. For 10 years Diane traveled full-time (with her husband) in violin concert ministry all over the U.S. and Alaska.
Two area music teachers help in teaching and performing:
Assistant Conductor: Peggy Essex-Klammer is a retired music educator ( Miami Dade County Public Schools) She is playing viola tonight.
Bill Hawthorne is a retired instructor of strings for the Washington, D.C. Youth Orchestra (for 20 years). He is playing the cello tonight.
